COMPOSTABLE OR BIODEGRADABLE?
These two terms, often used as synonyms, in fact have a substantial difference. A biodegradable element is not automatically compostable. Biodegradable is defined as any material that can be broken down by bacteria, sunlight and other natural physical agents into simple chemical compounds such as water, carbon dioxide and methane. A process that involves a long degradation time. European legislation defines biodegradable as a product that decomposes by 90% within 6 months. On the other hand, compostable (convertible into compost, a natural fertilizer) is defined as material that is not only biodegradable but also disintegrable and its decomposition process takes place in less than 3 months, in industrial composters.
