We can say Lucy’s life wasn’t easy. Born in 1833 to a humble family in Franklin County, New York, she began working in childhood to support her nine siblings. Despite significant obstacles—both economic and social—Lucy never stopped believing in her dream.
To succeed as a dentist, even though no woman before her had the chance!
A profession solely for men.
Unfortunately for Lucy, in mid-19th century United States and globally, dentistry and higher education were exclusively for men. Thus, Lucy relied on private mentors who believed in her talent and determination, overcoming societal taboos and discrimination of the time. Consequently, Lucy began practicing privately in 1861, opening the first woman-operated dental studio at just 28 years old. Quite an accomplishment 😉
Academic matters
Lucy’s late 19th-century dental practices may differ from modern ones, but given access to advanced tools, she could have become the most renowned dentist of her time!
