Today, July 8th, we celebrate the International Day of the Mediterranean, so today we bring you some food for thought on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We have indeed wondered how not to let this important event pass unnoticed because, in fact, the Mare Nostrum has been for centuries a stage for migrations crucial for the life of the continent, but also a basin of exchanges between peoples and a treasure trove of plant and animal biodiversity of global significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The question is: how much are we really valuing this priceless heritage? Is this sea truly “ours”?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n From a migratory standpoint, the history of the Mediterranean dates back to ancient times. According to studies by the Universities of Vienna, Florence, and Harvard, the earliest migrations to Sicily, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands predate even the Bronze Age. These movements were due to the expansion of certain civilizations, facilitating the rise of others, such as the Mycenaean civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In essence, the merging of peoples from Eastern Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor with the local populations of the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, and Sicily formed the genetic, social, and cultural basis of the peoples who inhabit these areas as indigenous today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Le migrazioni sono un fenomeno sociale, politico, economico e culturale che da sempre esiste ed esister\u00e0, specialmente nel Mediterraneo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Questi movimenti comportano dinamiche complesse e rappresentano di fatto risorse preziose di varia natura, sebbene oggi pi\u00f9 che mai, pare un fatto poco evidente. La strada da percorrere per assicurare accoglienza, inclusione e cooperazione, \u00e8 molta<\/strong> ed una crescita sostenibile degli stati e delle persone che li abitano sembra lontana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n La situazione del Mediterraneo non si ferma qui per\u00f2; il cambiamento climatico<\/strong> sempre pi\u00f9 precipitoso minaccia l\u2019intero ecosistema che il nostro mare custodisce<\/strong> nelle sue profondit\u00e0. Infatti, sebbene il Mediterraneo occupi solo l\u20191% della superficie marina mondiale, esso racchiude al suo interno tra il 4 ed il 12% della biodiversit\u00e0 oceanica della Terra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Oggi purtroppo l\u2019habitat di questi organismi \u00e8 sempre pi\u00f9 a rischio a causa dell\u2019inquinamento da acque reflue e per lo sfruttamento smodato che si fa delle sue risorse. I ritmi insostenibili che stiamo imponendo al mare rendono ormai quasi vani i suoi tentativi di auto-rigenerazione e in questo modo, viene meno anche la sua funzione di regolatore naturale del clima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anche a causa dello scioglimento dei ghiacci, il Mediterraneo \u00e8 destinato ad innalzarsi come gli altri mari e questo gi\u00e0 avviene a ritmo di quasi 4 millimetri all\u2019anno. Gli scenari che si prospettano appaiono perci\u00f2 catastrofici sia in termini ambientali, che sociali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eppure, una buona notizia c\u2019\u00e8: <\/strong>il nostro mare<\/strong> presenta una certa resilienza.<\/strong> L\u2019eterogeneit\u00e0<\/strong> ambientale che lo caratterizza rende il sistema ecologico naturalmente resistente <\/strong>e se da un lato il mare ci tende la sua mano, sta a noi scegliere di coglierla ora che si \u00e8 ancora in tempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lui da solo, non pu\u00f2 farcela.<\/strong> Fare scelte di consumo sostenibili, promuoverle ed acquisirle come abitudini \u00e8 l\u2019unico modo per ridurre il nostro impatto ambientale e migliorare la portata delle nostre azioni. Istituire nuove aree protette, optare per una pesca attenta, monitorare la razionalit\u00e0 e la sostenibilit\u00e0 di ci\u00f2 che produciamo e consumiamo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Questa pu\u00f2 essere la mano che diamo al mare e ciascuno pu\u00f2 allungare la propria, anche nel suo piccolo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Il mare \u00e8 Nostrum: idem la scelta.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLet’s start from the beginning…<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
